Leicester Writers Club Annual Awards Dinner

Leicester Writers Club Annual Awards Dinner

Leicester Writers Club held their Annual Awards Dinner, which is a celebration of the activities of the Club and its members. The Club has a long and impressive history of over 50 years, supporting writers in their writing, often leading to successful careers. The regular weekly Members meetings I have attended, whereby the sharing and critiquing of each others writing, is done in a most professional, friendly and constructive atmosphere.   I therefore attended the Annual Award Dinner event for the very first time, as a relatively new member to further acquaint myself with the Club and its members. We enjoyed a delicious meal, followed by a wonderful narrative introduction by our Chair Lindsay Waller-Wilkinson to the evenings activities: with guest Speaker Author Jean Chapman and later the annual announcement and giving of awards, to celebrate the achievements of nominated members.

A number of awards were given by Lindsay with assistance from the Vice Chair, recognising Members work for: fiction, non fiction and poetry etc, each recipient  was given a warm round of applause. I listened attentively, as Siobhan Logan (herself a LWC Award 2014 winner for Poetry and a long standing member of the Club) announced a new award for the club, that she had put forward, for the crafting of writing for listeners.  As Siobhan read out a list of successes in 2014, of the Club members nominated for this new award. My interest really piqued to hear of the many achievements, of members nominated in this category. I was genuinely shocked then delighted, with tears pricking the corners of my eyes, as I heard my own name announced, as the recipient of this beautiful award (an exquisitely handcrafted Native American Flute) for the Affective Digital Histories Creative Writing Commission, a choreopoem I wrote in 2014  titled: Love the life you live…Live the life you love ! I feel very proud and happy to receive this accolade from my esteemed peers. It has given me a great boost, to continue with my writing and I look forward with relish, to the coming year, for the Members meetings plus other literary events of Leicester Writing Club .

You can read my new choreopoem here as its published online: http://www2.le.ac.uk/departments/english/creativewriting/centre/creative-writing-commissions
